Butterflies and Bauhinia's

Bauhinia galpinii, or “Pride-of-the-Cape”, is a magnificent rambling shrub suitable for full sun or shade and tolerant of windy and dry conditions. The roundish two-lobed, light-green leaves look like butterflies. In fact, the bright, salmon-pink orchid-like flowers do attract hordes of butterflies! In full flower, “Vlam-van-die-Vlakte” is one of South Africa’s most beautiful shrubs and is suitable for lining spacious driveways, for an informal hedge, a mixed border, or a rockery. Bauhinia does tend to scramble and spread (up to 3.5m), so prune to shape when needed.
